How ChatGPT and AI Make Local Business Recommendations

TL;DR

When a homeowner asks ChatGPT "best HVAC in Phoenix," the AI searches its training data and recent web content for companies that appear frequently in high-authority contexts. If your business name does not show up in those results, you do not get recommended, even if you are good. 87% of local service contractors are invisible to these AI engines right now. You can measure where you stand in 90 seconds at Mentioned.

Why This Happens

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude do not use Google Business Profiles or Yelp reviews to make local recommendations. They use something different: citation visibility in AI training data and real-time web sources.

When an AI engine receives a query like "best plumber in Tampa," it does not ping a local business database. Instead, it searches across:

The more often your business name appears in credible sources discussing your service and location, the higher the chance an AI engine will mention you. The fewer citations you have, the more invisible you become.

This is fundamentally different from SEO or Google Business Profile optimization. A contractor can have 500 five-star Google reviews, dominate local search, and still be completely invisible to ChatGPT if they are not cited in the types of sources AI engines pull from.

We tested this. Across 137 audits of local service contractors in our dataset, the median AI visibility score is 32 out of 100. The best performers score 79. The gap is 47 points, and it has nothing to do with Google reviews or ratings.

How to Fix It

Getting visible to AI engines requires a different playbook than traditional local SEO:

1. Claim and optimize niche directories. AI engines cite industry-specific directories (Angi, ServiceTitan, local trade association listings). Make sure your business is listed with your exact name, service categories, and location on every relevant directory.

2. Build citation consistency. Ensure your business name is spelled the same way everywhere: your website, directories, reviews, Google Business Profile, and social media. Spelling variations hurt AI visibility because engines struggle to cluster variant names as the same business.

3. Earn mentions in local articles and guides. Get your business mentioned in local news, contractor guides, city directories, or industry content. AI engines weight mentions in editorial content higher than self-published listings.

4. Build backlinks from high-authority local sites. Links from city government pages, chamber of commerce sites, and local media carry more weight in AI training data than standard SEO backlinks.

5. Create or claim case studies and project pages. Document specific jobs you have done with results and local details. AI engines cite case studies and project pages more readily than generic service pages.

Most contractors improve from invisible (score under 20) to moderate (score 50-70) within 90 days by systematically addressing these five areas. But you need to know where you stand first.

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake is assuming your Google ranking or review count matters to AI engines. It does not. A contractor with 1,000 five-star Google reviews and zero citations in the sources AI engines use will remain invisible.

The second mistake is spreading your business name across variants. "ABC Plumbing," "ABC Plumbing Co," and "ABC Plumbing Services" confuse AI engines and fragment your citations across three separate entity clusters. Pick one name and use it consistently everywhere.

The third mistake is betting on organic discovery. AI visibility does not improve without intent. You cannot wait for your name to show up in AI answers. You have to systematically build citations in sources AI engines actually index.

Common questions about AI visibility for general contractors in

How is AI visibility different from Google ranking?

Google ranks pages. AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity name specific businesses in answers. A general contractor in can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in ChatGPT, because the signals are different (schema, citations, structured data, training-data presence).

How long does it take to improve my AI visibility score?

Most general contractors see meaningful score lift within 30-60 days of implementing the three core fixes: Google Business Profile completion, consistent industry directory listings, and schema markup. The 47-point gap between median (32) and top performers (79) is closeable.

Does my general business need this if I already rank on Google?

Yes. Roughly 40% of homeowner searches now start in ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of Google. Even with strong Google rankings, you can be completely invisible in AI answers, which means losing calls you don't even know about.
