Why Dallas Plumbing Contractors Are Missing from ChatGPT

It's 11 p.m. on a Saturday in Dallas. A homeowner's water heater just leaked all over their garage. They pull out their phone and ask ChatGPT, "Who should I call for emergency plumbing in Dallas?" The AI names three companies. Yours isn't one of them.

You don't know this happened. The homeowner calls one of the named companies instead. They pay someone who doesn't know their neighborhood, has longer response times, and wasn't who the AI picked for quality or speed. Meanwhile, you're sitting at home, missing that $400 call.

This scenario plays out hundreds of times a month across Dallas. And the contractors who are getting named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini are capturing the calls that should go to you. The gap isn't random. It's measurable. And it's fixable.

Why Dallas Plumbing Contractors Are Getting Missed

Dallas is a sprawling city. Unlike urban plumbing markets where density creates natural clustering, Dallas plumbing jobs are spread across zip codes from Frisco to Mansfield. That geography makes discovery harder for AI.

Your market is also mature. There are established plumbing companies in Dallas, some dating back decades, with brand recognition and review volume. They're already cited in AI responses. Newer contractors, or ones without a strong Google presence, get ranked lower or not at all.

Third, Dallas's climate creates seasonal demand spikes. Summer heat stresses water lines. Winter freezes (rare but brutal when they hit) cause burst pipes. During these peaks, AI gets asked the same plumbing questions thousands of times. If you're not in those citation pools, you're invisible during your highest-revenue windows.

Finally, most Dallas plumbing contractors focus on Google Maps and Reviews. They treat ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude as separate channels (if they treat them as channels at all). Meanwhile, AI systems are actively crawling and citing plumbing sources. The gap is visibility, not quality. You're good. You're just not findable by the new search layer.

What the Data Shows

We audited 137 plumbing, HVAC, and electrical contractors across Texas. The numbers are stark. The median AI visibility score was 32 out of 100. The top performer in the dataset scored 79. That's a 47-point gap between average and exceptional. For a Dallas plumbing contractor, that gap translates to roughly $5,000 to $20,000 per month in calls going to competitors instead of you.

Most contractors in that data set weren't invisible to Google Maps or review sites. They just weren't visible to AI. Different system. Different indexing rules. Different citation sources.

We tracked presence across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. Contractors with structured data (service area schema, local business schema, review markup) showed up 3x more often than those without it. Contractors with third-party citations in local contractor directories, industry publications, or local news got ranked higher. Contractors who just relied on Google business profile alone had the lowest visibility scores.

What to Do About It

Three moves. Tactical. Implementable this week.

Move 1: Add service area schema to your website. AI crawlers look for explicit schema markup that says "we serve Dallas, Arlington, Frisco, Irving" with coordinates. Don't make AI infer your service area from reviews. Tag it in structured data. This is 20 minutes of work on your homepage.

Move 2: Get cited in contractor directories and local trade sources. AI pulls citations from Texas Plumbers Association, state contractor databases, local business aggregators, and industry publications. If you're only on Google and Yelp, you're missing citation diversity. Your local chamber, state contractor board, and trade-specific directories are free or cheap. AI weights breadth of citations heavily.

Move 3: Audit your presence in each AI system specifically. Don't assume ChatGPT and Perplexity are the same. Some systems cite you. Some don't. Each one has different crawl cycles and citation sources. Test your visibility in all four systems individually. If you're missing from Gemini but showing up in Claude, the fix is different for each.
