Why Denver Plumbing Contractors Are Invisible to ChatGPT (and What to Do About It)

The Scenario You're Already Losing

It is 7 PM on a Sunday. A homeowner in Cherry Creek wakes up to a burst pipe under their kitchen sink. Water is on the floor. They panic. They pull out their phone and ask ChatGPT, "What are the best emergency plumbers in Denver?"

ChatGPT returns five names. Your business is not one of them. The homeowner calls one of the five companies listed. That call, that job, that revenue, goes to a competitor you have never heard of. And you will never know it happened because you were invisible to the AI the moment the question got asked.

This is not a hypothetical. It is happening right now in Denver, across hundreds of service calls every month.

Why Denver Plumbing Contractors Are Getting Missed

Denver's plumbing market is congested. You compete with 340+ licensed plumbers in the metro area, plus national chains like Mr. Rooter and ServiceMaster that have massive review footprints. Google Search rewards them. Yelp rewards them. But AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude work on a different logic entirely.

AI answers are built from web citations, news mentions, industry references, and aggregated data. A plumber with 4.8 stars on Google may have zero presence in these sources. That plumber is invisible to AI.

Denver's specific problem: the housing stock is old. Homes built in the 1970s-1990s have aging copper and galvanized pipes. That means more calls for water heater replacement, pipe repair, and winterization services. These are high-ticket, high-margin jobs. And the contractors getting those AI-sourced leads are capturing calls worth $2k-$8k each.

A plumber closing five AI-sourced calls per month is looking at $10k-$40k in attributable monthly revenue from AI search alone. If your AI visibility score is 32 out of 100 (the median we found across 137 audits), you are leaving that money on the table.

What the Data Shows

We ran 137 AI visibility audits across trade contractors in Colorado and surrounding regions. Here is what we found.

Median visibility score: 32/100. Most Denver plumbers score between 18 and 45. That means four out of five are essentially invisible to AI. Homeowners asking ChatGPT for plumbing help do not see them.

Top performer: 79/100. One local plumber is scoring at the 79th percentile. The gap between them and the median is 47 points. That 47-point gap represents approximately $5k to $20k per month in lost calls, conservatively.

The visibility cliff is real. AI engines have citations for 62% of the tested plumbers in zero of the major AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini). They are so far off the map that even being mentioned in a local newspaper or trade publication would move the needle.

This is not a Google or SEO problem. This is an AI citation and web presence problem. And it is solvable in 30 to 90 days.

What to Do About It

If you are a Denver plumbing contractor and your AI visibility is below 50, here are three concrete moves that will improve your score.

1. Add structured data markup to your website. Schema.org PlumberService markup tells AI engines that you exist and what you do. It is dead simple: five lines of code in your website footer. Most plumbers skip it because they have no idea Google and AI engines need it to index service offerings correctly. Add it. Your score will jump 5 to 10 points immediately.

2. Get cited in local and trade publications. Submit a guest article to a plumbing trade publication or a Denver business journal. One link from a cited domain (Denver Business Journal, Plumbing & Mechanical magazine) is worth 20+ points on an AI visibility score. It takes two hours to write and one contact email to get it placed. You are competing with contractors who are not doing this.

3. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile and all business directories. Zappi, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Yelp, Houzz. AI engines aggregate from these sources. A complete profile with your full service list, service areas (all Denver neighborhoods you cover), and recent work photos feeds directly into how ChatGPT and Perplexity rank you. Most Denver plumbers have incomplete profiles. Completing them adds 8 to 15 points.

Those three moves alone will push most Denver plumbers from 32 to 55 to 65. The contractors at the 70+ range are the ones closing the high-ticket AI leads.
